|Tarakan from the pier|
Through Malaysia's remotest gate, Tawau, we sneaked into Indonesia today. Contrary to my prejudices Indonesia has proved to be a much more pleasant place than Malaysia so far. People are greeting us and smiling at us again, like in the Philippines. Moreover, Tawau was so rundown that it fell short of all expectations.
Tarakan, however, is very pleasant and much cleaner.
Our entry was strange though. The customs officers wanted to seize our stuff. When I said we have 2 litres of liquor, one of them wanted to seize a bottle for "sampling". I started huggling with the officer (!) and I managed to save all the stuff.
Now we can go on to the estuary of the river we're sailing up tomorrow. A WWF colleague who will come with us will be waiting for us in a hotel. We might not be able to post any more messages for the next 2 weeks. We'll provide the stories later then. Don't worry unless we don't post anything until the 10th of April.
And finally, we exchanged our money and became millionaires in cash! :)
